Who Black is
Goku Black is not Goku. He is Zamasu, a Supreme Kai in training from Universe 10, who came to believe that mortals were a mistake the gods should never have allowed. He used the Super Dragon Balls to swap bodies with Goku, then killed Goku in his old Kai body, and Chi-Chi and Goten with him.
With a Time Ring he crossed into Future Trunks' timeline, teamed up with that world's Zamasu, and began the Zero Mortals Plan: wipe out every mortal, then every god who would object. Trunks called him Goku Black because he wore Goku's face, and the name stuck.
His form is Super Saiyan Rosé. A Saiyan body powered by a god's ki turns pink rather than blue, and every wound Trunks, Goku and Vegeta gave him made the body stronger, the way a Saiyan grows after a near-death fight. He also pulled a scythe out of his ki, which opened a rift in the sky that spilled out copies of himself.
What happens to Black
Manga spoilers, through the last chapter.
When Goku and Vegeta start winning, Black and the future Zamasu put on Potara earrings and fuse into Fused Zamasu, who is half immortal and will not stay dead. Trunks gathers the energy of everyone left on Earth into a sword and cuts him in two, but Zamasu's will spreads across the whole timeline as Infinite Zamasu.
Goku presses the button Zeno gave him. Future Zeno arrives and erases that timeline, Zamasu, Black and all. Whis then goes back and warns Gowasu in the present, and Beerus destroys the present-day Zamasu before any of it can start. Black is gone for good; the games keep bringing him back.

- Is Goku Black actually Goku?
- No. He is Zamasu, a Kai from Universe 10, in Goku's body. He used the Super Dragon Balls to swap bodies with Goku, then killed the real Goku, who was left in Zamasu's body. Goku's memories and heart were never his.
- What is Super Saiyan Rosé?
- Goku Black's own version of Super Saiyan Blue. Goku's body reached the god level, but the ki inside it belongs to a god already, so the form comes out pink instead of blue. Zamasu named it Rosé himself.
- Does Goku Black die?
- Yes, twice over. Fused with Zamasu, he is cut in half by Trunks, and what is left is erased along with the whole future timeline by Future Zeno. In the present, Beerus destroys Zamasu before he can ever become Black.
- Is Goku Black stronger than Goku?
- For most of the arc, yes. He gets stronger every time he is hurt, and Goku and Vegeta cannot beat him alone. It takes Trunks' sword, a fusion into Vegito, and finally Zeno to end him.
