Who Itachi is
Itachi is the brother who killed the whole Uchiha clan one night and left Sasuke alive, telling him to hate. He is a genius even by Uchiha standards, an ANBU captain at thirteen, and the Akatsuki member Naruto fears most.
His Mangekyou gives him Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that stretches seconds into days, and Amaterasu, black fire that does not go out. He barely uses either without going blind a little more.
What happens to Itachi
Manga spoilers, through the last chapter.
The truth is that the village ordered the massacre to stop an Uchiha coup, and Itachi did it to prevent a civil war, sparing Sasuke and making himself the villain so his brother would grow strong. He dies fighting Sasuke, already sick, letting Sasuke win. Brought back as a reanimated soldier in the war, he ends the Reanimation Jutsu himself and tells Sasuke everything. Itachi is dead at the end of the manga.
